Why is it called "search engine optimization"?What a misguided terminology is the phrase "search engine optimization". First, "optimizes" or "optimization" is one of those vague, technology-jargon words which sounds important but isn't, and likely means quite different things from one person to another. In the dictionary, it is "an act, process, or methodology of making something (as a design, system, or decision) as fully perfect, functional, or effective as possible", but in what way? That's the crux of the matter. It would seem that the phrase "search engine optimization" should mean optimizing search engines, but it doesn't. It actually means, optimizing web pages, which means changes made to a web page to improve the positioning of that page with one or more search engines, as a means of helping potential customers or visitors find a web site. Optimization may involve design/layout changes, new text for the title-tags, meta-tags, alt- attributes, headings, and changes to the first 200-250 words of the main text". This is a group of tasks in which the content of a web page is enhanced with additional or changed information, which causes the web page to appear near or at the top of the list of web pages a search engine produces when it searches for a particular word or phrase. Stated as a question, from a web site owner, it might sound like this: What can be done to improve the position my web page recieves in the search engine's listing of results, when people have searched for words and phrases which are key words for identifying, understanding and locating my business, products and services?
